Dear All,

I was thinking of getting rid of my stock exhaust of my Ducati Monster 696 and to invest into something more exciting.

Its going to be either Termignoni or Akrapovic. I am mainly interested in getting the slip ons however I noticed that the Termignoni comes with an air-filter and an new ECU. There is also a version with only the slip ons. My questions is now do I really need all these things and what would they benefit me besides getting some more HP.

If I decide to get just the Akrapovic or Termignoni slip ons do I need to do any other modification to the bike such as air-filter, engine settings and so on ?

Let me know if you have any other recommendations for me.

Thank you

Slip ons generally do not require any other mods.

As far as the Termi kit with the filter and ECU, not only will it yield some more HP, often times those kits offer smoother power curves. The stock ECU and exhaust must meet Euro 3 requirements which frequently put manufacturers in the position to make compromises that hinder optimum performance.

As far as Akrapovic, they also make quality pipes.

If $$$ are not a big factor, I'd go for the Termi kit with the ECU & filter.

The nice thing about the Termi full kit is well, that it is a full kit.

Why is it better? What will it do for you? Generally people say that it's not about the HP, it's that it changes the ride of the bike. You tend to lose a lot of the low end lean condition that causes a lot of the choppiness that new riders don't like, and some old riders. Because of that the entire power curve is changed and becomes more linear rather than over powering like a two stroke on pipes. This can improve your throttle response and make you faster through corners. If you no longer worry about chopping the throttle at enter because you coast through corners worried about the amount of wrist and the such surge of power on the exit, then you can run through the corners with the RPMs up.

Why one kit or another. For me the full kit just gets the job done. Buying it, you know that Ducati has already tuned the bike and ECU to work together. While I still recommend you either let the dealer install the kit, or plan to ride the bike to the dealer after the install, as you may need a little exhaust gas tweaking due to your elevation and other factors.

With buying just slip ons, as well as aftermarket, you may find yourself wanting/needing to send your ECU out for reprogramming. Many people complain of extreme lean conditions and lots of exhaust popping afterwards as they can now flow a lot more air through the engine.

If you decide to go slip ons, as far as which brand, that's more aesthetics as long as you buy a quality set. From there they can all experience the same issue of needing to be tweaked or reflashed to get them to run in correctly.

My dealer wanted over $400 to install the Termi slip on exhaust on my bike (which comes with new ECU and air filter). It did require a bit of tweaking which they performed for a substantially lower fee after I installed the exhaust myself.

Thank you very much for the detailed answers. I agree with the choppiness you have in lower rpm. This is from time to time very frustrating as I am also a new rider.

So I found on the web a used Termignoni Carbon Set for a very good price however it does not include the air filter neither the bolds or springs.

I was thinking I could always get the bolds and springs on ebay but I am worried what the air filter concerns. Do I need the Termignoni filter or is the ECU and slip ons enough. I am not sure if they ECU is setup to have the full set or if it doesn't really matter.

I hope you can help me with this one.

Thank you

Generally it's not so much a different filter but a different airbox cover, or you are instructed to cut a hole in the airbox at a certain point. Many people will install a K&N filter in place of the stock. I like MWR air filters. Others run Pipercross.

I believe the DP kit comes with an opening in the top of the air box to flow more air to the filter. Something like this can replicate it.

That's the MWR power up kit.
Using their air filter and power up kit along with Termignoni pipes and the DP ECU gives a massive power gain to the 696. Boosting the bike from 67.5 hp as stock to 74hp, that's still 3hp higher than the full Termi kit.

Yes I'm a fan of MWR. I got such a boost when I did my Sport Classic with their full GP airbox kit that I had to take the bike back to the dealer for some tuning as the bike was running very lean, that's on full Termi and DP race ECU.

Hopefully SD will chime in as to how the DP was different than the stock set up since he did his own.

The DP (Termignoni slipon) comes with a K&N style filter and plastic part that bolts down on top of the new air filter and replaces part of the airbox.

Everything just bolts on easily. Hardest part was accessing the stock ECU and the air filter since it resides underneath the fuel tank so you have to take off the plastic panels and then remove the tank or have someone support it while you unbolt the ECU and replace the air filter.

You can do it right away. Just follow the same break in procedures as if it were stock.
